It is always mysterious when one sees an owl flying at
night. One doesn't expect to see a bird flying in the dark. This is different
in the north. There lives a completely white owl that hunts during the day.
He is one of the few exceptions, together with the great gray owl. The white
coat of the snowy owl makes his wonderful yellow eyes stand out. They look
like amber set in silvery jewelry. |
Sometimes I
am in the mood to just paint a big Cat's head, to enjoy the real feline
expression. Such a painting can be smaller since the head of the cat is full
in the image. Details are not necessary now, and an out of focus effect
brings the cat closer to the viewer. |

A
hiking trip in the forest is never complete without encountering a
woodpecker. But if you see a pileated woodpecker, then the hiking trip
becomes a treat. Seeing a pair of these black and white flying wonders gives
me a happy feeling. The hammering sound they make on the bark of dead trees
has fascinated me since my childhood. To me this sound represents the spirit
of the forest. |
A cold, misty night can dress the scenery with a wonderful
glittering ice cover, and that is what I wanted for my background.... wolves
often have to travel many miles, especially in winter, to have a successful
hunt. But I chose this title mainly because as a species, there are
still many obstacles standing in the way of their survival. |

After a trip to Botswana in Southern Africa, I was
surprised to learn that so many animals can survive for such long periods
without any water. A very big part of Botswana is the Kalahari desert. Since
there is no surface water available for much of the year, the Kalahari lion
rarely drinks. The Kalahari is a monochromatic, predominantly flat country
with the classical acacias, low scrub and tussocky grasses. To the north lies
the delta of the Okavango river, the only river that doesn't flow to the sea,
but disappears in the sand. Lion watching in the Kalahari is an
adventure. One doesn't get them "on a plate" as in Kenya. You have
to find and follow the tracks for a long time. It is Africa as it was
discovered by the Europeans. |

Yellowstone National Park is my favorite place in the
U.S.. I never tire of watching the male elk herding the cows and keeping
away the younger bulls. I have often witnessed this scene, when on a
hot Indian summer day, they prefer to stay in the water. With his thick
neck and enormous antlers, it is one of the most impressive scenes in nature
when the male elk starts to bugle |
I wanted to play with light in this painting and with the
element of camouflage in nature. Fawns have no odor and are very well
camouflaged, which protects them against predators. When the painting was
finished, I felt that the left side was begging for some action. I painted
the red squirrel screeching at the fawns, which suggested to me the title
"Broken Silence". |

If a polar bear is a dangerous animal, it becomes
really dangerous when it has cubs; but if there is no danger to the young,
one cannot imagine a more peaceful mother. In "Mother of Pearls", I
wanted to have the feeling of being part of that family, close to that big,
soft, wild mother. |
